Onze Belgische kameraden van de wereldmorgen hebben een uitgebreid  interview met Greg gedaan, zij vroegen of wij het ook wilden posten. Met alle liefde natuurlijk. Heel veel leesplezier, met dank aan Christoph Devriendt voor het interview en Anne Carolien Köhler voor de foto’s!

Wat gebeurde er met ‘Trial’ na de split in 2000?

Greg Bennick: “Na 10 jaar muziek maken, toeren en bijna constant met elkaar optrekken, waren er te veel spanningen die de kop op staken. We zochten elkaar ook niet meer op en in 2005 deden we in Seattle, Budapest en Londen een reünieshow. Vier jaar later speelden we op Burning Fight Festival in Chicago, Fluffest in Tsjechië en Anti-fest in Stockholm. En tijdens deze nieuwe tour spelen we in Rusland, Oekraïne, verschillende Oost-Europese landen, Duitsland en Nederland.”

‘Trial’ staat bekend om zijn erg maatschappijkritische teksten. Zo staat bij elk nummer vaak nog uitleg over de tekst. Geldt die politieke insteek ook voor je andere band, ‘Between Earth and Sky’?

“Met Between Earth and Sky focussen we meer specifiek op de psychologie van het menselijke lijden. We vroegen ons af: ‘Wat gebeurt er als je aan jezelf werkt en die bewustwording nadien gebruikt om in je omgeving anderen te helpen?’ Iedereen in de groep heeft interesse in politiek, maar de teksten van de nummers gaan meer over filosofische, psychologische en existentiële zaken. Je eigen problemen onder ogen durven zien, is een eerste stap om een positiever zelfbeeld te krijgen. Dat is erg belangrijk. Onze eerste mini-CD is momenteel uit via het Europese Refuse Records en begin volgend jaar brengen zij ook onze full-CD uit.”

Wat betekenen hardcore en straight edge momenteel nog voor jou?

“Voor mij zijn beide nog steeds erg inspirerend. Straight edge zorgt ervoor dat je toegewijd kan blijven aan een idee, het idee dat mentale helderheid belangrijk is. De term ’straight edge’ bindt nog steeds mensen, omdat we als sociale wezens dat ook nodig hebben.”

“Mensen vinden het fijn om verbonden te zijn met anderen. Het voelt soms zowel aan als een zegen en als aan een vloek. Bijvoorbeeld, wanneer mensen naast verbonden te zijn met anderen, soms ook mensen uitsluiten. Vanuit dat xenofobe gedrag ontstaan er dan vaak net sociale problemen en dat keur ik uiteraard af. Maar het blijft vooral toch een positief gegeven.”

“Hardcore betekent voor mij vandaag misschien nog wel meer dan dat het vroeger deed. Ik vind het geweldig dat mensen samen komen en gepassioneerd en geëmotioneerd kunnen zijn door muziek en ideeën! Zulke  energie-uitspattingen worden ook niet aanvaard door de maatschappij: als wij midden op straat zo’n gedrag zouden vertonen, zouden beginnen lopen en roepen, dan zouden mensen raar opkijken, het niet aanvaarden en ons gek verklaren. Maar tijdens optredens kan zo’n gedrag wel en het zorgt er zelfs voor dat er minder geweld is in de samenleving omdat mensen hun negatieve energie kwijt kunnen.”

“Ook is het belangrijk om nadien die negatieve energie om te zetten in een positief iets en je te engageren! Persoonlijk is het voor mezelf ook vast en zeker een uitlaatklep voor mijn demonen. Dat is wat hardcore betekent voor mij. Want dit is niet de revolutie, maar wel het entertainment en de muziek van de revolutie! Nadien komt de vraag welke impact in revolutionaire termen de gebeurtenissen in de wereld hebben op ons persoonlijke en maatschappelijk leven.”

Volgens Carl van First Blood is een minderheid van de fans die hij spreekt, geïnteresseerd in de teksten. Wat is jouw ervaring?

“Bij Trial ligt dat zeker hoger, maar wij zijn uiteraard veel minder populair. Onze fans zijn meer gepassioneerd en meer bezig met de teksten. Maar er zijn altijd mensen voor wie het enkel om de muziek en het dansen gaat. En hoewel ik tussen de nummers vaak monologen afsteek over de betekenis van een nummer, komt er nooit commentaar, maar veeleer applaus. Dat bewijst dat onze fans ook de inhoud belangrijk vinden. Zij weten dat er ideeën en emoties gecommuniceerd worden.”

Vertel eens wat meer over je betrokkenheid bij ‘One Hundred for Haiti’ en ‘One Hundred Shows for Haiti’?

“Ik ken al enige tijd enkele mensen in Haïti en na de verwoestende aardbeving van januari 2010 trok ik per zeilboot met enkele vrienden van Miami naar Haïti met medisch materiaal en voedsel. Daar aangekomen, zag ik de ravage en sprak ik met de bevolking. Die getuigenissen hadden een enorme impact op mij. Zodat ik bij mijn terugkeer besloot om meer structureel te werken en richtte ik de organisatie ‘One Hundred for Haiti’ op. Het oorspronkelijke idee was om 100 mensen te vinden die elk 1000 dollar wilden geven.”

“Dat bleek al gauw een te hoog bedrag te zijn, ook voor zakenmensen, maar toen kwamen er wereldwijd verschillende fans, die een kleine bijdrage wilden leveren. Er werd beslist om de naam te behouden, maar de fondsenwerving gebeurt nu meer algemeen en het doel is specifiek, een kliniek in Port-au-Prince steunen die gratis medische zorg verschaft. Sindsdien hebben we ook andere structurele zaken op poten gezet: mensen helpen om weer in hun levensonderhoud te voorzien, niet enkel financieel. Op de website staan ook filmpjes en foto’s over onze projecten.”

“‘One Hundred Shows for Haiti’ was een collectief van mensen die wereldwijd 100 benefietoptredens wilden organiseren. Het geld daarvan ging naar de organisatie ‘Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees.”

Op het T-shirt dat jullie naar aanleiding van het Burning Fight Festival maakten, staat het interessante opschrift ‘Make This A Movement Again Instead Of A Scene’. Vanwaar de keuze voor dat opschrift?

“We zullen nooit één verenigde hardcore-beweging hebben, waarin iedereen met hetzelfde akkoord gaat. En het is goed dat er zoveel verschillende meningen zijn. Maar als mensen hardcore meer zouden zien als een beweging én minder als een (muziek)scène, dan zou je meer mensen bereiken met progressieve of radicale ideeën!”

“Op die manier zou er ook minder geweld zijn, omdat een scène wel onderhoudend en leuk is, maar ook mensen tegen mekaar opzet. Een beweging daarentegen is zoveel groter en zoveel meer maatschappelijk: er wordt aan politiek gedaan, er wordt gediscussieerd, er worden dingen georganiseerd, er is meer maatschappelijk bewustzijn, … ”

“Voor mij hoeven mensen Trial niet volledig te volgen of er helemaal mee akkoord te gaan, zolang ze maar met iets bezig zijn dat de wereld tot een betere plek maakt. Wij hebben zoveel passie in de hardcore-scène, we zouden die passie moeten vastpakken en er een transformatie mee creëren, echt samen iets doen voor anderen, mensen samenbrengen rond bepaalde progressieve ideeën, een tegenbeweging opbouwen tegen de heersende kapitalistische maatschappij, directe actie organiseren! Dat is hetgeen me interesseert in hardcore.”

Hoe blijf je op de hoogte van wat er gebeurt in de wereld?

“Ik lees zowel alternatieve (Indymedia, Huffington Post, …) als traditionele berichtgeving. Een erg recente bron van berichtgeving zijn de Facebookposts, die heel snel interessante informatie over de actualiteit verspreiden. Boeiend is ook om de economische en conservatieve bladen te lezen. Ik volg dus duidelijk niet één bron, maar verscheidene. Het internet is in deze hét instrument om op de hoogte te blijven van de actualiteit in de wereld, maar vooral ook om te weten wáárom iets bepaalds gebeurt!”

De wereld zit nu al enkele jaren in een economische crisis. Hoe kijk jij als Amerikaan tegen deze crisis aan?

“Als je de economische crisis op wereldschaal bekijkt, is het behalve voor een kleine rijke minderheid, moeilijk voor het grootste deel van de Amerikaanse bevolking. Maar de toestand in Haïti en andere plaatsten in de wereld waar ik al heen ging, is voor mij nog veel schrijnender.”

“Ik heb uiteraard het geluk dat ik mijn leven in veiligheid kan leven, waardoor ik regelmatig kan reizen en wijdverspreide contacten kan hebben met mensen. Toch zie je overal al dat mensen hun levenstandaard naar beneden gaat. Volgens mij gaat er pas echt iets veranderen wanneer grote groepen mensen niet meer akkoord gaan dat er voor hen enkel kruimels overblijven en ze zich daartegen gaan verzetten. Hoewel ik ook denk dat dat nog niet voor onmiddellijk zal zijn, omdat veel mensen het ook nog te goed hebben.”

Geloof jij dat een ander economisch systeem mogelijk is?

“Ik ben overtuigd dat een ander economisch systeem noodzakelijk is, maar of het mogelijk is, weet ik niet. Ik ben er nog niet uit welk systeem dat dan zou moeten zijn. In discussies met mijn marxistische vrienden komt dat ook vaak naar voren. Ik zie alleen geen ander economisch systeem dat duurzaam blijkt te zijn.”

“Ik hecht meer geloof in collectieven en initiatieven op kleinschalige basis die concrete dingen aanpakken. Alleen zie je dat naar mate die groter worden in zulke initiatieven vaak egoïstisch gedrag binnensijpelt. The looking-out-for-number-one-perspective … ”

“Ik zou graag hebben dat mensen denken in termen van gemeenschappelijk belang, van minder consumeren of verbruiken en nuttige vrijetijdsbestedingen. Dat is geen wereldwijd economisch systeem, het zijn geen revolutionaire voorstellen, maar kan zeker bijdragen tot die andere wereld.”

“Mijn marxistische vrienden hebben daar uiteraard een andere mening over. Zij argumenteren dan bijvoorbeeld dat Haïti in een ander economisch systeem helemaal geen hulp nodig heeft. Maar, ik zou zeggen, in tussentijd kan je toch gewoon niet anders?”

“Je kan toch niet zeggen aan de mensen daar: ‘Wacht even tot we het hele economisch wereldsysteem omgegooid hebben? Voor mij is het veeleer een balans tussen de alledaagse praktijk en een theoretische ideaalbeeld in de toekomst.”

Mijn ervaring met geëngageerde en kritische artiesten is dat zij vaak erg individueel ingesteld zijn. Hoe zie jij dat persoonlijk?

“Artiesten zijn inderdaad vaak op zichzelf betrokken, zelfs diegenen die ingaan tegen het kapitalistische systeem. De rol van de artiest is volgens mij de mensen er aan te herinneren dat het creëren van kunst geen eindpunt is, maar juist een begin: kunst creëren vanuit inspiratie en zodoende meer inspiratie creëren voor andere mensen.”

“Ons doel is om de mensen na een optreden naar huis te laten gaan met een positief gevoel, kracht, engagement, gemeenschapsgevoel, vriendschap, liefde, … Art lives in the next layer outside the experience.”

Er zijn veel bands die indruk op mij hebben gemaakt. Er zijn veel bands die mij geïnspireerd hebben om bepaalde boeken op te pakken, bepaalde keuzes te maken of gewoon om stoom af te blazen. Er zijn echter maar weinig bands die op dit moment zoveel voor mij betekenen als Trial. Vegan. Straight Edge. Zeer politiek beladen.  Hier een aantal citaten die mij hebben geraakt:

“What we want, we must create”

Dit is wellicht meteen de mooiste zin van Trial. Deze zin vat zoveel samen. De wereld die we graag willen zien, daar zullen we zelf heel hard aan moeten werken. We moeten er iedere dag heel hard voor knokken. Er is niemand die het voor ons gaat doen. Sterker nog, ik zou niet willen dat iemand het voor mij doet!

Dit betekent dat iedere dag weer een nieuwe uitdaging is. Iedere dag moet er een moment zijn waarop gewerkt wordt aan de wereld die we zo graag willen zien. Hoe je dat specifiek vorm geeft, dat is aan jou. Ik heb geen idee waar je talenten liggen, wat je leuk vindt om te doen of waar je goed in bent. Sommigen vinden het belangrijk om hun straat schoon te houden, anderen koken graag voor anderen. Weer anderen gaan in de aanval en vernielen eigendommen van verwerpelijke bedrijven. De lijst is eindeloos, de kansen liggen overal, maar we moeten ze zelf oprapen.

Het citaat heeft voor mij te maken met verantwoordelijkheid nemen, uit een passieve slachtofferrol komen. Ja, we zijn inderdaad tegen heel veel dingen en we zijn verbaasd over het grove geweld dat wordt gebruikt tegen mensen, dieren en de natuur. Dat klopt… maar dat is niet de drijfveer. De grote drijfveer is dat we voor een wereld zijn waar men gelijkwaardig is.

“Because you can’t kill an idea, I will not be ruled”

Het maakt niet uit hoe sterk de repressie is, er zal altijd verzet zijn tegen onrecht. Deze gedachte alleen al doet mijn hart sneller kloppen. Overal ter wereld werken mensen hard voor een betere leefbare wereld. Deze mensen laten zich niet leiden, die bepalen zelf wat goed en belangrijk is. Deze mensen zijn gedreven door een ideaal, en zij handelen daar naar.

Velen voor ons hebben niet opgegeven dat de strijd hevig werd. Velen zijn opgesloten, gemarteld en zelfs vermoord. Maar hun ideeën zijn nooit om zeep geholpen. Zij hebben nooit geknield over tirannen (in welke vorm dan ook). En daarom zij deze mensen nooit overwonnen.

Laat ik duidelijk zijn: ik claim niet dat aan de winnende hand zijn of dat de “wereldrevolutie”  er morgen is. Daar gaat het niet om. Waar het wel om gaat is dat overal op deze planeet mensen wonen die je blind kan vertrouwen. Waar je kunt aan kloppen en de nacht kan doorbrengen of die een bord eten voor je neus neer zetten zonder dat je er om hoeft te vragen. Kortom: solidariteit. Laten we het gebruiken als een wapen.

“These hands would drip with blood if I traded truth for certainty”

Ik word iedere dag herinnerd aan de mogelijkheden die ik heb. Wellicht kies ik voor het “veilige” pad: huisje, boompje, beestje. Carrière maken, verzekeringen afsluiten, sparen voor later… deze keuzes zijn niet te weg te denken. Maar het wel keuzes. Je hoeft er niet aan mee te doen. Bovendien vraag ik mij af of het werkelijk zekerheden zijn…

De zekerheden die hierboven zijn omschreven komen met een prijs. Een koophuis moet voor betaald worden. Een verzekering moet voor betaald worden. Een vakantie, een auto, een pensioen… moet voor betaald worden. Er moet dus gewerkt worden om de zekerheden te creëren. Daar gaat veel tijd en energie in zitten die niet meer ergens anders in gestoken kunnen worden.

Ik probeer echter bij mijn idealen te blijven. Ik werk wel omdat ik in mijn basisbehoefte moet voorzien. Maar het werk dat ik doe, is iets waar ik achter kan staan. Bovendien werk ik niet vijf dagen in de week, maar drie dagen. De andere dagen heb ik vrij om te genieten van werkelijke zekerheden: tijd voor mijn gezin, tijd voor het groeien van mijn eigen groente… en tijd voor verzet tegen deze leugens.

Na dit succes hebben we besloten weer meer op festivals en concerten te gaan staan. Omdat het noodzakelijk is. Omdat het leuk is. Een uitgebreide lijst komt spoedig.

PS: de werkelijke reden dat we gaan is natuurlijk omdat Morning Again een reünie-show speelt. Siked!

PS2: we komen natuurlijk onze makkers van Astpai supporten. Een van de beste bands van het moment. Uit Oostenrijk, met te gekke teksten. En wat een stem, amai!

Old factory

The venue in Cologne was actually really nice. It was an old factory building. You see, the downside of all these huge venues is sometimes the atmosphere gets lost. It happens that the show is just a rockconcert. Nothing more, nothing less. People hand in their ticket at the door, buy a drink and something to eat, enjoy the set of their favorite band and go home satisfied.

All fine. But that’s not what dragged me into Punkrock. Sure, I went to bigger shows as well. That was my introduction. But… I was really blown away by these small DIY shows where you would be one of the crowd of eighty people. And that would be a packed show. The bands were in the crowd before the show, same goes for after the show. If there was any stage, it was much higher than thirty centimeters. There was literally no distance between the band and the crowd. In the back there were info-stands. The feeling I could add something to these shows. Being a participant, not a number in the crowd.

Same old stories…

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not dwelling on the past. And I’m not saying it was all better back in the days. Definitely not. What I am saying is that the atmosphere is completely different. I hope the crowd of tonight will be touched by a band like Rise Against and start to check their local scene with local bands. I hope that part of tonight’s crowd will be touched by the DIY magic, which means to me: you can create the movement how you wish to see it.

Oh, by the way. The show was decent indeed. The crowd wasn’t going nuts like other shows. We did have  a good time with our new found friends of Sea Shepherd.

Market of ideals

At this show we’re together with PETA2 and Sea Shepherd again which makes it like a little market. We get along really well and it’s nice to hear about the animal liberation movement in Germany. There are quite some different groups active who all have their own qualities. There are some militant groups, some more mild who do lobby work, organizing demonstrations. It aIl sounds promising. Plus there’s a big anti-fur demonstration on March 26. Too bad we can’t go since we’ll be in Munich…

We are spreading the newsletter of Black Fish, an European based conservation organisation that takes action on the issues of whaling, industrial fishing and marine animals in captivity. They have been doing great work so please feel free to support them on your own (creative and/ or financial) way.

German shows

I was wondering if people would be interested in our info-stand at the German shows. The language barrier can be a bit bigger than in the other countries we’ve been to. Plus Germany has so much great literature in their own language. So why read an English book?

During the evening, I didn’t see much difference here than at other the shows. It was a busy night for us. What does surprises me is the books kids pick up. I think we’d sell a lot of Crimethinc material. Those books are fairly cheap and good introductions to anarchist ideas. And of course we do sell quite some. But also the tough hard-to-read books… Chomsky On Anarchism is one those favorites. No Gods, No Masters is another one. Pacifism As Pathology and books by Derrick Jensen are selling like warm muffins. Interesting indeed…

Don’t get me wrong, I love long drives.  The best is you get to listen to your favorite music while staring at the landscapes. Some of the bands that have been on the radio a lot are The Gaslight Anthem, Osker, Adhesive and many many more. Oh, and Fall Out Boy too. Just to piss Etjen off. There are also some bands I recently discovered like Masshysteri, RVIVR, Hjertestop and Man Overboard. Good stuff.

The most beautiful venue

From the beginning of the tour, Etjen was excited to go to Vega in Copenhagen. The most beautiful venue in Europe, he said…. Well, Etjen sure is right about this one. Garlygee,  what a place! The whole building, the whole atmosphere is all in fifties-style. Incredible. The backstage was great, the food amazing and the sound in the venue was really good. It was also the “small” venue of the tour with a capacity of fourteen hundred people.

That’s something I can’t really get used to; the popularity of Rise Against. I know them as a punkrock band on Fat Wreck Chords. Now they are playing all these enormous venues with a whole crew around it. Stagetechs, managers, roadies, merchpeople, nightliners, lighttechs and everything. I’m glad the people in the band are with their both feet on the ground. Plus I’m happy to be part the tour. By now we’ve met most of the crew and everybody appreciates our contribution to the tour.

Parenthood on tour

I found out there are also a few fathers on tour who have their families at home. To me that’s a relief because we’re sort of in the same situation. It can be difficult sometimes. I realize we’re not leading the normal life. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t. It’s the same for these guys who have their families. I was talking to Tim about parenthood and the dilemma’s you face. Raising your kids vegetarian/ vegan, standing on the playground with arms covered in tattoos, going to protests with your kids. And daddy being away because he’s on tour… those aspects aren’t very “common”. From time to time uncertainty comes around the corner which makes me think I’m doing it the right way. Luckily there isn’t one correct way for the upbringing of your own children. My girlfriend and I try to stick to our ideals and we try to spend as much time with our kids as possible. Than again, we also have our lives. I’m convinced I wouldn’t be a good father if I would focus completely on those kids. So a good balance between your role as a parent and stick to your own identity is key.

Meeting up with old friends

So back to the tour. Copenhagen is a completely different crowd than in Stockholm. A lot of kids turned out to be very interested in the books, but in the end we didn’t sell as much as in Stochholm. We slept at our friend Iben.

I know Iben for a long time already but we haven’t seen each other in four years. It was good to meet up. Too bad is wasn’t for long because we had to leave the next morning quite early. She’s back in school and starts her medicine study next year. Awesome.

We woke up really the other day to drive from Nijmegen to Malmo, Sweden. With only three hours of sleep, Etjen fell asleep in the van the second we took off. Poor Etjen who hardly ever drinks, in De Bijstand…

Long drives to see my Swedish darling

The drive was long indeed. But I was excited because we were to meet up with my dear love Andy. We haven’t seen each other in three years and it was amazing to hang out again. Elke was there as well and we went to this Twenties style party, where they had a cool band playing. Apart from some nice people we’ve met, the party was kinda boring. We went to sleep early because Etjen was still seriously injured from last night and I could use some sleep too.

Andy and Stina (a friend of Andy) drove with us to Stockholm, a nice six hour drive. I’ve never been to Stockholm. I heard a lot of good stories about it. Etjen was a bit skeptical if the Stockholm crowd would be interested in radical books. We’d see…

The venue was huge, a capacity of over three thousand people. And it was sold out… When doors opened the audience already took interest in our books. And after the show we worked our asses off. So many people bought books I thought were tough to sell. Some people left with a stack of books under their arm, it was amazing to see. I was glad the long drive wasn’t completely worthless.

Anarchism in Stockholm

We slept at Gustav’s place, a friend of our friend Thomas. Gustav is involved in building a social centre in Stockholm. The first one they built was burnt down by neo-nazi’s, but Gustav and his friends are determined to rebuild it again. They want to lower the barrier between the anarchist movement and the rest of the world. We all know the anarchist movement tend to built a wall around itself, and is not very welcoming to outsiders all the time. The social centre wants to break that, so it’s open to everyone. It’s quite similar to what we are trying to do with the bookdistro at shows. If we take this night as an example; there were so many kids who were eager to get some input apart from the mainstream bullshit they hear everyday. Two Kids who bought a book about stencil art, a kid who bought a vegan cookbook, another kid who bought a book about anarchist history. A kid told me he knew Chomsky at first from his linguistic efforts but now was really interested in his political views. So he bought Chomsky On Anarchism.

All and all a perfect trip to Sweden!

Yvo vs All-You-Can-Eat

We arrive at the venue. It’s in the middle of Camden; the place to buy your punk-outfit…. With a huge market, vegan restaurants (yes, the deadly thai restaurant is there as well…) and legendary venues it’s the place to be for everybody who’s interested in alternative cultures.

Tim introduces me to Missy who’s the manager of Rise Against. Next to the band, Missy is responsible for the fact we’re on this tour and arranged we could have some space to sell the books. So the credits go out to her! We know each other by email but never actually met and it’s nice to finally shake hands and talk in person. Tim also apologizes for not mentioning on stage. Apologies accepted, no hard feelings there !

This day is quite hectic for the crew. The show will be live-streamed on internet. Plus there are a lot of people from ‘the industry’ at the show…  luckily we don’t have much to do with that. I’m just happy not everybody freaks out about this and.
I found out the Thai restaurant is literally on the opposite side of the street. Etjen and I load out the books as soon as possible and get ready to go to battle. We’re heading to the restaurant: this time it’s war (you may scream it out load like in the Converge song). We will eat this joint out of business motherfuckers!

We lost. Ugh.

Major label business…

While still enjoying my food baby, I’m thinking about this whole situation. I mean the live-stream, the music industry and such. I guess that’s always the endless discussion. How can a band have an anti-capitalist message and at the same time be on a major label? We all know the examples of the bands which fucked up. We also know Rage Against The Machine who did quite a good job of spreading the message and inspired thousands of people with their songs. For me, it’s important a band take the message serious. And is honest towards themselves and the audience. There’s a thin line between ’selling out’ on your ideals and making a great contribution to the movement by inspiring people.

A band will probably never know the exact impact it has with spreading a message. What I do is what I see at these shows. People of all ages (but mostly young people) come the shows, a lot of people are interested in the literature. A small percentage spends their money on books. We hear a lot of great stories of what people are doing locally. And sure there are some who disagree, think it’s bullshit or laugh about it. But I can count those reactions on one hand.

So I think you can definitely say it makes an impact, at least on a personal level. What we hope is that it doesn’t stay with knowledge, insight and acknowledgement. We truly hope the knowledge is put into action in whatever form suits the person. That may be direct action, that may be starting a local anarchist collective, that may be forming a Food Not Bombs group. As long as ideas are put into action.

Inspiring people the show

My ideas drift away as the show starts. Kids run in, excited to see their favorite band. Impact or no impact, I’m a sucker for that excitement, it’s amazing to see. I get to chat to a couple who were involved with quite militant direct action concerning animal rights. They served  time in prison and now they are running a animal sanctuary somewhere above London. The couple was overwhelmed by our bookdistro. I was overwhelmed by their background. I’ve read about their actions in From Dusk Till Dawn and animal liberation magazines. I’ve always wondered who the people were behind the mask. Now I’ve met them, regular people like you and I. They were fed up by the horrible treatment of animals, and they saw how little impact legal demonstrations had. They simply decided to do things that actually make an impact which eventually led to illegal direct action.

The way they talked about it was breathtaking. They didn’t take any pride in it, they didn’t think it was something special. At the same time the couple was very open and honest about direct action. They also acknowledged some things went wrong. But overall they only regret the actions they didn’t do. People like these put their own lives on the line for the animals. They are willing to sacrifice their own freedom to set others free.  So there I was, selling some books… it’s all so relative. I thank the couple for sharing their experiences with me. I thank them for their courageous actions.

Berserk

After this, the show of Rise Against starts. The venue explodes. For a tour like this, the venue is small. Kids go berserk. Rise Against is shredding like hell. Finally a show I can relate to. Shit, this band is good! I wonder if Tim didn’t forget about his promise… well, he certainly didn’t. Check out for yourself, it’s on the first minutes of the video:

After the show we were so busy selling the books, talking to people, answering questions and what not. It was an amazing night. Yep, London I love you.

Active

We’re sleeping at Jon and Marta of Active Distribution. It’s good to see them after so many years. Active Distribution is one of the biggest distributors of radical anarchist literature. Jon has been doing it since 1985 (gollygee, I was three years old!) and they’re still going strong. Although I’m tired, we stay up talking. We’re also able to restock some of the books which is definitely necessary. Thanks for the hospitality guys!

Setting up

Etjen and I are more experienced in setting up the table. We don’t have to sort out all the books sicne we’ve done that in Tilburg so we set up the info-stand in no time. To be honest: it looks impressive, all those stacks of books. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the help of many people working together. First there’s Etjen from Just Like Your Mom who’s helping out on every level of this tour. From arranging vans, to picking up books. From not stressing when I was freaking out. To using all his contacts for sleeping places and backstage entrances. I’ll mention others along the way. So keep reading…

Sea Shepherd

Wouter from Sea Shepherd Belgium also do an info-stand this evening. I know Wouter by face from shows for years already and it’s nice to get him to know a bit better. Sea Shepherd Belgium is mainly doing info stand work. They are doing a great job at the show, a lot of people are interested and buying tshirts.

Backgrounds

We meet with the members of Rise Against who are excited to have us on tour. Again, it feels good to add a constructive aspect to the tour. Tim (the singer) pretty much has the same memories  of me of the shows he used to go to. There were info-stands at the shows, benefit shows for animal rights groups and such. The music and resistance were almost inseparable. That was the first introduction to radical ideas for the both of us. Tim promised to mention our presence on stage. Due to the hectic show, he forgot…

The show was so much better than Tilburg. Even though the sound wasn’t very good, the atmosphere was great. A lot of the audience was interested in the books. We didn’t sell as much as in Tilburg, but we handed out a lot of free magazines.
